The fight for affordable medicine

AP//Scientists work at an Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines facility in Cape Town, South Africa, on Oct. 19, 2021.

South Africa, Colombia, and other countries are adopting a more combative approach towards drugmakers in order to gain access to affordable treatment for tuberculosis (TB) and HIV.

This shift is seen as a response to the global disparity in access to COVID-19 vaccines, with poorer countries realizing they cannot rely on others for essential medicines.

One specific target is the drug bedaquiline, used to treat drug-resistant TB, with activists protesting efforts by Johnson&Johnson to protect its patent on the drug.

South Africa has investigated the company's pricing policies and J&J has announced it will drop its patent in over 130 countries.

In Colombia, the government has declared it will issue a compulsory license for the HIV drug dolutegravir without permission from the patent-holder.

While these actions are seen as positive steps, experts emphasize that more needs to be done to enable poorer countries to produce their own medicines and vaccines.

Mysterious cosmic rays baffle scientists

Ever heard of Amaterasu, my guess is no, but it has been making it’s presence known recently puzzling scientists.

After detecting an extremely high-energy particle falling to Earth. The Amaterasu particle is one of the highest-energy cosmic rays ever detected and is second only to the Oh-My-God particle in terms of energy.

The origins of the particle are unknown, but experts believe that only powerful celestial events can create them.

The particle seemingly emerged from the Local Void, an empty area of space bordering the Milky Way galaxy. The mystery deepens as there is no high-energy source in the area that could have produced the particle.

Further investigations are needed to understand ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and their origins.
