Saudi Arabia set to host the 2034 World Cup

Saudi Arabia will host the men's 2034 World Cup as Australia has decided not to bid. The only other nation to bid is Saudi Arabia. FIFA had stated that the 2034 World Cup would be held in Asia or Oceania, and Australia was seen as the only potential challenger to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has hosted several major sporting events since 2018. The World Cup bid is seen as an important step for the country, although it has been accused of "sportswashing" to distract from reputation issues.

Israel’s POV
Israel refuses call for ceasefire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected calls for a ceasefire stating that "this is a time for war". He praised the successful rescue of an Israeli hostage by the Israel Defence Forces and security agency Shin Bet, but a video released by Hamas showing three other captives still in captivity calling for a prisoner swap tempered Israeli joy. Netanyahu said that the IDF's advance through Gaza created opportunities to free hostages, but Hamas would only release them under pressure. He called Hamas militants "monsters" and said Israel would continue to pursue them. The Israeli government has rejected a Hamas offer to swap hostages for about 5,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

Netanyahu further compared the situation to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the terrorist attack of 9/11, saying that the calls for a cease-fire were calls for Israel to surrender to terrorism.

The conduct of the Israeli counterattack on Gaza has generated widespread outcry, with humanitarian groups and the United Nations General Assembly calling for a cease-fire. However, Netanyahu dismissed accusations of collectively punishing Gazans and stated that Israel was doing what it could to prevent civilian casualties.

The US is supporting the opposition of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, stating that Israel still needs to target Hamas leadership.

Netanyahu slammed for deleted tweet

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced criticism for a tweet blaming intelligence chiefs for failing to warn him of an impending Hamas attack on October 7. He later deleted the post and issued an apology, saying he fully supported the security chiefs. Defense Minister Benny Gantz criticized Netanyahu's attempt to evade responsibility, stating that "when we are at war, leadership must display responsibility." Opposition leader Yair Lapid also condemned the prime minister's actions, calling them an effort to blame the security establishment and weaken the IDF. Former Mossad chief Yossi Cohen, a close ally of Netanyahu, emphasized that responsibility should be taken at the start of one's job, not midway.

Largest refugee camp in Gaza bombed

More than 50 people have been killed and 150 others wounded in an Israeli air raid on the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza, according to Palestinian authorities. The Indonesian Hospital director said the total number of casualties is still being counted. The Israeli bombardment targeted a large area of homes in the camp, resulting in dozens of people being trapped under the rubble. The Israeli military confirmed the attack, stating that there was a senior Hamas commander in the area. This attack comes as Israel continues its relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip, resulting in over 8,500 deaths, including more than 3,500 children, since the start of the conflict on October 7.

Gaza’s interior ministry reports that the Jabalia refugee camp was 'completely destroyed' in the Israeli bombardment.

Jabalia is the largest of the Gaza Strip's eight refugee camps.

Is AI Breaking The Law?

News publishers have accused A.I. chatbots like ChatGPT of using copyrighted articles to power their technology. The News Media Alliance, a trade group representing over 2,200 publishers, released research showing that developers of these tools rely heavily on news content to train the technology therefore violates copyright law.

The study also found instances where chatbots reproduce language from news articles, directly competing with the publishers' work. The News Media Alliance has submitted the findings to the U.S. Copyright Office for further investigation.

Generative AI is still a relatively new breakthrough and doesn’t have as much regulation as other technologies. There are no laws firmly enforced to ensure ethical practice, raising questions and alarms in many countries about privacy and security that the AI summit will hopefully tackle.

Biden’s New Ai Regulation

US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to regulate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and ensure its safety.

The order requires developers of powerful AI models to share safety test results with the government and calls for the establishment of rigorous testing standards by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The Department of Commerce will develop guidelines for identifying AI-generated content, while agencies funding life science projects will establish strong new screening standards to prevent AI from engineering biohazards.

Biden also urged Congress to pass data privacy legislation and for the Department of Justice to address algorithmic discrimination. The measures have been hailed as the strongest set of actions any government has ever taken on AI safety, security and trust.
