Over 200 people have been convicted in Italy's largest mafia trial in three decades, with charges including drug trafficking, criminal association, extortion, and bribery brought against the members of the Ndrangheta crime syndicate, who are considered to be one of the most powerful mafia’s in Italy.

The three-year "maxi trial" was held in a specially built high-security courtroom in Calabria, with over 900 witnesses . The trial included non-mafia individuals among the defendants, such as police officials, public servants, and business people.

The Ndrangheta is estimated to control up to 80% of Europe's cocaine market and boasts an annual turnover of around $60bn.

The trial was the largest of its kind since the 1980s and saw judges examine thousands of hours of testimony.
